DIONYSOS: “For this polis must learn to the full, even if it does not want to, what it is to be uninitiated in my bacchanals”.

                                     Euripides’ Bacchae 39-40

We are very honoured for the opportunity of having Professor Richard Seaford as our guest speaker for an online lecture on ‘Politics and Mistery-cult in Euripides’ Bacchae.

“This drama has since antiquity never been remotely understood. I will explain (a) its religious significance, as an aetiological myth of the rite of passage known as mystic initiation, which accommodated death by rehearsing it, (b) its political significance both for the Greeks and ourselves, as setting the man-of-money against community, and (c) the relationship of (a) to (b)”.
